In this theatre, about more than 600 performances were held in about 48 weeks in a year which involves significantly applauded series of Shakespeare, one of the Stage touring productions in the World and family and youth leaning training concentrated in the summer. In the year 2005, this theatre had won 3 Laurence Olivier Awards and 36 Joseph Jefferson Awards. |
Barbara Gaines has established Chicago Shakespeare Theatre in the year 1986. It commenced its presentations on the top of the Red Lion Pub in the city of Lincoln Park neighborhood.
The company got the consent to construct their own theatre in the year 1999. The creations at Chicago Shakespeare Theatre involve works of Shakespeare and his musicals and plays. This theatre is also a division of the Shakespeare Theatre Association of America.
History
Barbara Gaines established Chicago Shakespeare Workshop in 1986 whose name was changed to Chicago Shakespeare Repertory and at last it was changed to Chicago Shakespeare Theatre in 1999.
It worked its first 12 terms at the residency of Ruth Page Theatre where he performed numbers of Shakespeare’s plays like ‘King Lear’ and ‘Hamlet’ and other plays such as ‘Timon of Athens ’ and ‘Troilus and Cressida’.
In 1997, this theatre moved from the Ruth Page to a new locality named as Navy Pier which was famous for the charms of family and also famous for the tourist attraction in the Midwest .
The company commenced a large scale investment operation to fund the travel and lastly began this theatre in the year 2000. Now, this theatre is on the third position in Chicago and runs 400 percent faster as compared to the growth trend of industry.
Facilities
Chicago Shakespeare Theatre is built on a 75,000 square foot area and is a seven story building located on Navy Pier in Chicago which addresses the offices of administration, box office and performance venues. This theatre contains about 510 seats and has been called as Chicago Shakespeare heatre by the founder Sir Peter Hall and Royal Shakespeare Company director.
Deep proscenium and flexible thrust stage, acoustics and state of the art technology and a flexible performance space enables large scale constructions to feel closer to any member of audience in the home.
Educational Outreach
‘Team Shakespeare’ program of the Chicago Shakespeare Theatre is the biggest arts in education program which is shown in Chicago .
This program spreads to about 50,000 students through touring programs, group matinee performances, discussions and abridged theatre productions and also spreads to most of the students through the workshops and resources of teacher.
